Wednesday 1st February

A pretty average bird day was had around the village. But with it being the start of a new month, i`ll mention every species seen or heard ;

Garden (am) : Robin, Blackbird, Dunnock, House Sparrow, Rook, Cormorant 1 S Magpie, Woodpigeon, Black-headed Gull, Greenfinch, Stock Dove 1, Starling, Collared Dove, Blue Tit, Wren.

Hillies : Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 (drumming).

Lake : Pied Wagtail, Carrion Crow, Mallard, Tufted Duck 27, Canada Goose, Coot (inc colour-ringed bird), Pochard 3, Common Gull 2, Shoveler 7, Moorhen, Tree Sparrow, Chaffinch, Grey Heron 1.

Spoil Heap : Long-tailed Tit, Sparrowhawk 1, Mute Swan 2 E.

TPT : Bullfinch.

Garden (pm) : Jackdaw, Goldfinch.

Birds : February - 37

We all know that birding can be unpredictable, in that you never know what`s gonna be seen. Well, the same can be said about photographing em. Some days you can`t manage a single shot (even of the common stuff) and then on others, like today, you get them to perform ;

  2. Its amazing Dean how our local patches very. One persons 'average day' would be a red letter day to the other. For example at Shenstone...Tree Sparrow, only 2 records of single birds in the last 5 years. Common Gull, only 2 individuals recorded in the last 4 years. Yet there are birds I see almost daily that would be patch megas for you such as Corn Bunting. Interesting isnt it.

  3. So many more than I saw! Our BH Gulls are not showing the summer plumage yet but they are certainly showing courtship tactics, there were a lot of them wheeling about yesterday, a pretty sight.

  5. Jeremy : Cheers.

    Jason : It is. Regards the species you mention. There`s a resident colony of Tree Sparrows around the lake and Common Gulls are a daily sighting during the winter months.
    As for Corn Bunt, a dream bird for me, these days.

    Toffeeapple : There`s only 1 or 2 BHG`s showing signs of summer plumage. Early days yet, though.

    Warren : Not half, cheers.
